Looks like we’ll be waiting a little while longer to witness the most famous comet of all time.
Halley’s Comet is a famous comet that visits Earth about once every 76 years. It was named after astronomer Edmond Halley, who discovered that the comet follows a regular orbit around the Sun.
As it gets closer to the Sun, the comet heats up and releases gas and dust. This creates a bright glow and a long tail that can stretch millions of miles. People have been watching Halley’s Comet for over 2,000 years, and it appears in many old records and artworks.
The comet last passed by Earth in 1986 and will return again in 2061. When it comes back, it will be a rare chance for many people to see this famous object in the night sky.
