The Labrador Retriever was the “top dog” breed in Canada in 2025. The Canadian Kennel Club has released its list of the 10 most popular purebred dog breeds in the country.
The Labrador Retriever has been Canada’s most popular dog for more than 30 years. Known for being friendly, loyal, and great with families, Labradors are also energetic and love the outdoors, perfect for the Canadian lifestyle.
Another favourite is the Golden Retriever. These dogs are known for their gentle personalities and intelligence, making them excellent family pets as well as therapy and service dogs.
The German Shepherd is also very popular, landing at number 3 on the list. They’re highly intelligent and protective, which is why they’re often used for police and service work, but they’re also loyal companions at home.
Other breeds that are commonly seen in Canadian households include the Poodle, the Havanese, and the Bernese Mountain Dog.
