A LOT can happen in a month and it’s been over a month since my last garden update. This garden I’ve got going on has seen some major changes over the past 6 weeks, including growth and death. Its been a busy August for me, trying to make sure I get the best harvest possible out of everything I planted.
The peas were pretty quick to be finished, I know next year to put a fence alongside them to allow them to grow(its my first time planting a garden). The beans did quite well, we managed to harvest a ton which got us 12 jars of pickled beans, and the rest were great just on their own. Zucchini, man oh man, did they pop off! I was handing those bad boys out like crazy, and there’s still more growing. Anyone have an good zucchini recipes?
I had a good run for the first bit with the potatoes, but eventually the potato bugs showed up and no matter how much I dusted them, the bugs won that battle, with the reds at least. Had to pull them this past weekend, but the yellow taters are still going strong. When i comes to squash, I planted 3 plants, and there’s probably going to be about 50 spaghetti squash in a few weeks, which I’m thinking I’ll gladly be donating some to the food bank.
Cucumbers have been abundant for the past month and I’m super glad they produced because nothing beats a fresh cucumber straight form the garden. Can’t eat 200 cucumbers as is though, so many of them got pickled. Jars of dill, bread and butter, and sweet pickles will make nice stocking stuffers come Christmas haha. The peppers are hit and miss, they were going pretty strong up until this weekend where the chilly nights kind of knocked em a bit.. still getting some good banana and jalapeno peppers! The bells are also showing good signs.
Last but not least, the pride and joy, the crown jewel of my garden this year is most definitely the watermelon! There’s a solid 6 of them that are looking like prize melons and I cannot wait to dig into those. Don’t think they’ll make it onto my head in time for the Labour Day Classic August 31st.
