I’m going to get right into it, I’m not on board with cheering for Edmonton during their push for the Stanley Cup. I just can’t and the sole reason is because I’m a Canucks fan and cheering on a rival team isn’t in my DNA. Yes, I get they’re the only Canadian team left in the playoffs, and I wish them all the best, but you won’t find me clapping my hands when they win a game. Ask yourself this, do you think any Calgary Flames fans are out there hootin’ and hollerin’ when McDavid scores a goal? No, they’re not, at least not a lot.
Would Montreal fans cheer for the Leafs if they were on the verge of winning the cup? Or did any Boston Red Sox fans cheer for the Yankees in the World Series last year? HELL NO. They were almost 100% cheering against them.
As a Dodgers fan, when San Francisco won the World Series in ’10, ’12 and ’14, there was not one ounce of me hoping they’d win and I don’t think many SF folks were on LA’s side last year in the WS. I wouldn’t expect them to be. That’s just the way sports fans operate.
With all this being said, I would like to see a Canadian team end Canada’s Stanley Cup drought. If it happens to be Edmonton this year, good on them, but don’t expect me to be jumping up and down in my living room if they do.
